Paper basis weight and thickness describe different properties. Specify both when both matter to your thermal transfer printing process, and ask which material construction each value covers. Do not convert a catalog weight figure into a thickness or assume that it establishes compatibility with a particular printer.
Haoxuan’s Thermal Transfer Paper listing shows the product reference S90, “No Adhesive” and “90g” under Product Gsm. Preserve that exact catalog wording in the inquiry, then request confirmation of the intended unit and the measured thickness. The displayed shorthand should not become an invented micrometre value or a specification for a complete adhesive label laminate.
Understand what the two fields mean
Basis weight expresses mass per unit area, commonly written as grams per square metre, or g/m². Thickness, also called caliper, describes the distance through the material under a stated measurement method. The units answer different questions. A number reported in grams per square metre is not a number reported in micrometres.
Two paper constructions with the same basis weight need not have the same caliper. Do not create a universal conversion factor from a sample or another supplier’s data sheet. Ask for the actual measured value for the proposed material, with the unit, test method and any stated range. If only a nominal value is available, label it nominal rather than implying that every point on every roll was measured.
Name the layer being specified
Before comparing numbers, establish whether the proposal covers raw paper, a coated facestock or a finished label construction. A thickness value for paper alone is not the total thickness of paper plus adhesive and release liner. Conversely, a total laminate measurement cannot be copied into the paper-only field.
The S90 table’s “No Adhesive” wording is particularly relevant here. Do not assume that the listed product is a finished self-adhesive label. If the intended order requires an adhesive-backed construction, ask the supplier to identify that construction separately and confirm the scope of its specifications. Keep every layer’s reference connected to the proposed order rather than combining convenient values from unrelated catalog pages.
Use the printer’s requirement as the comparison target
Obtain the current media requirements for the actual printer and feeding setup from its documentation or the responsible technical team. Record which property the limit concerns, its unit and the construction it applies to. A paper weight range and a total media thickness range should appear in different fields even when both are listed in the same manual.
Do not infer approval merely because a material falls within one numerical range. Ribbon compatibility, media format, feeding and the required print result remain separate checks. Haoxuan’s printer sample-request guide provides the broader context for identifying the complete printing combination.
Prepare a two-property comparison record
- Supplier product reference and proposal revision
- Material stage: paper only, coated paper or finished construction
- Basis weight, confirmed unit and whether nominal or measured
- Thickness, confirmed unit and measurement method
- Layer or full construction covered by each value
- Printer requirement and its document reference
- Sample identity, evidence date and unresolved fields
Keep the supplier’s original value alongside any unit conversion. Converting millimetres to micrometres is a unit conversion within thickness; converting basis weight to thickness is a different problem that cannot be solved by changing units alone. Having these distinctions visible prevents a purchasing spreadsheet from making a plausible-looking but unsupported comparison.
Read an ambiguous offer without filling the gaps
Imagine a hypothetical offer that repeats “90g paper” and gives no thickness. The correct purchasing status is that the weight wording has been supplied, its exact basis needs confirmation, and thickness remains unanswered. It is not appropriate to insert “90 micrometres” because the numbers happen to look related.
If a second offer provides a thickness but does not identify whether it includes a liner, the comparison is still incomplete. Ask both suppliers to answer the same construction-specific fields. These examples explain how to handle missing information; they do not describe actual quotations or measurements from Haoxuan.
Ask for measurements that can be interpreted
When caliper is a critical requirement, request the measurement method used, the material conditioning where relevant and whether the reported figure is a nominal specification, a sample result or a range. Ask the responsible parties how variation is represented. A single spot measurement cannot establish the full variation across a production lot.
Use qualified measurement practices rather than pressing a household tool onto a sample and treating the reading as a certified result. This guide does not prescribe a testing standard, measurement pressure or acceptance tolerance. Those details should come from the applicable requirement and an agreed procedure for the proposed product.
Keep dimensional approval separate from print approval
A sample can meet a documented dimensional requirement while still needing a printing trial. Record the printer, ribbon, material and settings used in that trial, together with the relevant readability observations. Do not describe a weight or thickness match as proof of barcode verification, moisture resistance or service life.
If a sample differs from the proposed production construction, identify the difference before using it as purchase evidence. A successful result supports the documented combination and conditions; a changed coating, format or material requires a review of whether the earlier evidence remains relevant. Keep rejected and inconclusive observations with the accepted record.
Send a specification question with a clear boundary
Send Haoxuan the S90 reference and your media requirements, explicitly asking for the basis-weight unit, caliper, construction scope and available supporting data. Include the intended printing method, requested format, quantity and destination so technical questions can be linked to the commercial inquiry.
Leave unavailable figures marked unconfirmed. The useful outcome is a comparison that another reviewer can trace to its sources, not a completed-looking spreadsheet assembled from assumptions. Current availability, sample arrangements and delivery terms must be confirmed separately for the actual proposed order.
