What causes vinyl not to release from transfer tape?
Vinyl may not release properly from transfer tape when the tape has too high a tack level, the vinyl adhesive has not bonded firmly to the application surface, or insufficient pressure was applied during installation. Dust, moisture, low temperatures, textured surfaces, and removing the tape too quickly can also cause problems. To improve release, clean the surface, apply firm squeegee pressure, allow the vinyl adhesive to set, and peel the transfer tape back slowly at a low angle. Choose a lower-tack transfer tape for delicate or low-adhesion vinyl.
What tack level should I choose?
The right tack level depends on the vinyl and the application. Low tack transfer tape is suitable for large graphics, delicate films, and easy release. Medium tack transfer tape is a good choice for general vinyl decals, lettering, and sign making. Higher tack transfer tape is better for small letters, detailed graphics, matte vinyl, or vinyl that is difficult to pick up. A higher tack level is not always better. If the tape is too aggressive, the vinyl may stay on the transfer tape instead of bonding to the final surface.
